Protein Powders and How to Find Out If You Are Paying Too Much for Yours

The most popular proteins on the market have evolved to become technical nightmares for newcomers to navigate. Also, as I show below, even the most diligent shopper is thwarted in their attempts to compare and contrast like products due to the lack of standardization of the dreaded "Serving size". What is a serving size?. Well to advertisers it's anything they want it to be that lets them sell you the story they want. See how below they use it to create facts from fiction.

Protein best sellers per the Nutritional information on the packs.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

Brand name / Protein per serving/ Serving size /Calories per serving/ Approx cost

Muscle Milk / 25g / 70g / 300 cals / /Lb

Muscle Milk light / 25g / 50g / 195 cals / /Lb

Elite Whey (USA) / 24g / 31g / 114 cals / /Lb

BSN Syntha 6 / 22g / 44g / 200 cals / .5/Lb

BSN Lean Dessert / 21g / 35g / 150 cals / /Lb

BSN True Mass / 46g / 145g / 630 cals / Lb

Monster Milk (USA) / 50g / 84g / 350 cals / /Lb

EAS Myoplex / 42g / 78g / 300 cals / /Lb

ISO 100 (Isolate) / 25g / 28g / 106 cals / /Lb

Looking at the data above it would appear reasonable to expect that BSN True mass and Monster Milk to have one of the highest protein contents... in fact the table below shows that True mass is actually the lowest, which to be fair is reflected in their price, and Monster Milk is in the mid-range. Also True mass boasts "630 calories per serving", yet has less calories weight for weight than Syntha 6. Lean Dessert is actually mid-range and only 5 calories less than the True Mass product! My advice it to take the scoop measure and throw it away and use cup sizes and the chart below along with the knowledge that you cannot absorb more than 30g protein per serving. 100g is about 3 scoops, so for True Mass you only need one scoop to get the 30g of protein not the three scoops they advise, the bonus is that it will last three times longer.

BTW the problem in reading label information has been solved in European countries by standardizing all foods label information to 100g. Any standard weight unit would do, however the additional nice thing about 100g is that it is 100 so 77g of protein for instance is also 77% protein, pretty cool eh! This allows any food substance to be measured and compared against any other food substance and easily understood by consumers.

Quality of Protein ranking (all normalized to 100g or about 3 scoops)

Brand name /Protein /Serving /Calories /*Approx cost

BSN True Mass / 32g / 100g / 434 cals / /Lb

Muscle Milk / 36g / 100g / 428 cals / /Lb

Muscle Milk light / 50g / 100g / 390 cals / /Lb

Elite Whey (USA) / 77g / 100g / 368 cals / /Lb

BSN Syntha 6 / 50g / 100g / 455 cals / .5/Lb

BSN Lean Dessert / 60g / 100g / 429cals / /Lb

Monster Milk (USA) / 60g / 100g / 417 cals / /Lb

EAS Myoplex / 54g / 100g / 385 cals / /Lb

ISO 100 (Isolate) / 90g / 100g / 378 cals / /Lb

Other considerations.

Buying Creatine, glutamine and Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's)separately allows one to optimize or tailor to their workout needs, for example you may want to take them at a higher frequency or at different times in the workout cycle than your protein shake.

The low quality cheap multivitamins in my opinion are a waste of time (pass out in your urine). I recommend separately sourcing a food based Men's / Woman's Multivitamin, which have far better absorption rates.

Another tip:

Your body can only absorb about 30 g protein in a meal so if you get the 42g-46g or 50g per serving proteins, decrease the serving quantity, saving money and making a "lighter" shake.

My Recommendations:

It depends who you are and what you want but personally but for obvious reasons I am currently an Elite Whey fan which I supplement with Creatine Ethyl Ester and a Mens food based multi-vitamin. After that BSN's Syntha 6 looks good, though I'm not certain from the packaging how much Enzyme, BCAA and L-Glutamine is in it. It also has the highest amount of calories per 100g in the list. If additional calories are a concern then it's Elite whey, then ISO 100, then surprisingly Myoplex, with Myoplex being cheaper and more convenient especially if going on a short trip, but ISO 100 has the highest purity level.

If it comes down to deciding between Monster milk or True mass I would go the Monster Milk route marginally on cost and higher L-Glutamine, BCAA, and even some creatine which you would need to source separately with True Mass, which is the cheaper option.

What about Muscle Milk?

With the largest market share, it is the third cheapest per pound, and if you can digest it without enzymes and like the flavor, and do not want L-Glutamine and extra BCAA's or creatine then all is well.

Flavor is a personal choice thing that is very important, personally I like plain vanilla as I can add whatever fruit flavor I like to it. I have also kept the non-dairy products off the analysis for now as none of the above is relevant if you are allergic to milk proteins.

Lastly, there are many other brands on the market and I'll be adding some of them to the above list as I get the data in. Also the maths to convert is fairly easy so just calculate for 100g and compare to the above. If you find a better product be sure to share it back with me.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Whey Protein

When it comes to bodybuilding, you know that protein intake is vital to your success. Unfortunately, even if you are a big meat eater, you will find that you will not get the amount of this important nutrient - or even the right protein - in your diet without taking supplements. One of the most important supplements that body builders need is whey protein. It has many more advantages then disadvantages.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

The advantages of whey protein are too numerous to list, however, here we will discuss some of the more important advantages. For example, it stimulates the lGF-1 production, which stimulates growth. When you use whey protein isolates, you will be getting about ten percent of immunoglobulin proteins that are intact. This means that they have two pairs of polypeptide chains. While that may be too confusing for the average person to understand, what it means to you is that your immune system gets a boost on top of helping your muscles to grow.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

No other source in existence contains as much branched chain amino acids. You need these amino acids because you actually lose them when the muscles catabolize. Most people don't realize that muscles are damaged as much as they are built in body building, but whey protein essentially replaces everything that your muscles are losing during and after your workouts.

Whey protein also helps to detoxify the body by making the body's production of endogenous glutathione greater. This too helps to make your immune system stronger as well, and this is just another of the many advantages.

You may wonder how body builders can work out day after day, without muscle soreness. In fact, beginners often quit following their first couple of workouts, simply because they can't bear the pain. Here is another advantage of whey protein. Whey isolates have protein chains that contain four essential amino acids that also act as natural pain killers. Overall, whey is the best for the body, because the body makes excellent use of it...better use than any other type.

But, as with anything else, there are disadvantages of whey protein. First, the best products on the market are fairly expensive, making them inaccessible to most people who get into body building. There are products that are affordable, but these are usually of a much lower quality, and are often full of sugar. Furthermore, these cheaper products are not digested as easily as a quality product.

Overall, however, most serious body builders will search high and low to find a whey protein product that is of high quality, and affordable at the same time, because the advantages are so plentiful, while the disadvantages typically only involve the cost of the product. Simply put, you can't go wrong with a quality whey protein product when you are serious about body building. In light of how beneficial it is, it is ironic that it was once considered a waste product in the process of making milk and cheese.

Why Do I Need the Best Protein Supplement?

As a body builder, you already know that you need a protein supplement, but with the high cost of supplements, why is it that you need the absolute best protein supplement that you can find? First, why can't you just get the protein that you need through the foods that you eat, and second, aren't all protein supplements created equally?

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

Well, the fact is that all protein supplements are not the same. First, there are different types of protein supplements. There are whey isolates, whey concentrates, and others. Ideally, you should choose a whey isolate, which is the best protein supplement, or a whey concentrate, which is considered to be the second best protein supplement.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

But aside from the type, which brand is the best? Some people think that this is simply a matter of personal choice, but it really isn't. Some supplement brands are simply better than others, and it is important to know the difference. When you walk into the health food store, or start shopping online, you will literally be overwhelmed by the hundreds of choices out there, with all of them claiming to be the absolute best protein supplement.

One idea is to read online reviews. This is something that you should do, regardless. However, it is also a good idea to know how to read labels, and to be able to understand exactly what you are reading. Also note that the best protein supplement for your neighbor is not necessarily the best supplement for you. It all depends on your goals and your body type.

For example, if you need to gain weight, along with muscle, you will choose a protein supplement that contains carbs and fat. On the other hand, if you want to gain muscle, but not really put on any weight, you will want to choose a protein supplement that has no fat or carbs.

Protein supplements are essential to body building. While there are many foods that are sources of protein, such as eggs, meats, and beans, the fact is that you will not be able to eat enough of those foods to get the protein that you need for body building, without gaining a lot of weight (fat) in the process, or risking your health from other problems eating so much of these foods can cause, such as high cholesterol. Therefore, protein supplements come on the scene.

The protein that you consume has a two fold purpose, when it comes to body building. First, it helps to repair muscle that is damaged, which occurs when you work out. Second, it helps to build the muscle, which is what you desire, and why you workout. Again, there is simply no way that you could consume enough of it, through regular eating, to accomplish what you hope to accomplish, and this is why you need the best that you can find and afford.

BSN Syntha 6 - Time Release Protein Supplementation

BSN Synth-6 is a high-end, broad-spectrum protein powder that is suitable for athletes and serious bodybuilders that require higher then normal intakes of quality proteins for muscle repair and regeneration from their diets.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

Scientific research and results have backed the facts that strength trainers, active physical fitness buffs, and healthy lifestyle enthusiasts often need up to 1.8 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight depending upon their exercise routines. This protein intake is much higher than the normal Daily Recommended Allowance schedules. Protein consumption must come in the form of many small meals during the day that are supplemented with either protein bars or shakes like BSN Syntha-6 for positive results as active bodies require a steady and constant stream of incoming proteins.

Syntha 6 Protein Powder

BSN Syntha-6 has a unique blend of 6 proteins that release into the body at different rates of speed. This wonderful tasting protein powder works like a time-release product to keep your body in positive nitrogen balance until your next scheduled protein based meal. The proteins each have a different set of amino acid profiles that together can supply up to 8-hours of healing protein and energizing protein properties for your body to enjoy. Amino acid profiles are a bit hard to diagram with words, so let's just state that BSN Syntha-6 is loaded with the following time-release constituents.

Syntha-6 proteins time-release information:

Ultra-filtered Whey Protein Concentrate releases for 2-3 hours. Micro-Filtered Whey Protein Isolate releases for 1-2 hours. Egg Albumen releases for 2-3 hours. Milk Protein Concentrate releases for 4-6 hours. Calcium Caseinate releases for 6-8 hours. Micellar Alpha, Beta-Caseins, and Caseinates release for 6-8 hours each.

Our body needs multiple kinds of amino acids to remain healthy. Some of the amino acids can be made by the body, while others must go into the body in the form of foods. If our body is not getting enough calories from the proteins that we eat to make the necessary amino acids, the body will take mass away from muscles to use for its half of the amino acid manufacturing project. This is why the BSN Syntha-6 protein powder is an essential fuel for muscle repair. The constant protein supply is used by the body to deliver amino acids, so that muscle-mass can repair quicker and grow larger.

It is rare to find a product that offers so much with and still deliver a fantastic taste. The BSN Syntha-6 protein powder comes in 7 flavors, with the newest flavor of Chocolate Mint. Other popular flavours include Chocolate Milk Shake, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberry, Vanilla Ice Cream, Banana or Cookies & Cream flavors.
